VMI Class of 1860 Ring identified to William Austin Brockenbrough 40th Virginia Infantry

Nicely inscribed inside is W.A. Brockenbrough 1 of 41 July 4, 1860. VMI rings are unique in the fact that after 1848 each class was responsible for designing it's own ring. William "Buck" Austin Brockenbrough Jr. was born December 11th, 1836 into a prominent Virginia family rich in Virginia History. When the war broke out William Brockenbrough entered service at Warsaw ,Virginia on June 4, 1861 as a 1st Lieutenant in company E 40th Virginia Infantry. Lt. Brockenbrough was appointed adjutant in October 4, 1861. He quickly rose to acting brigade Ordinance officer by December 1862 and was wounded during the Battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia. In the summer of 1863 he was the Division ordinance officer and later assigned to temporary duty as assistant Chief of Ordinance, 3rd corps Army of Northern Virginia. Later he served as Assistant Adjutant General in Heth's Division June to August 1864 and fought in all the major actions of the Army of Northern Virginia under A.P. Hill and Henry Heth. William Brockenbrough ended the war as a Captain and returned home to Richmond County Virginia and married Louisa Beadles in 1865. After the war he worked as a county clerk and farmer until his death on August 6, 1896 in Richmond County, Virginia and is buried in the Emmanuel Cemetery in Emmerton, Virginia
