Full standing view with sword taken by Charles Rees Richmond, Virginia. The image has what appears to be Major Marsle on the back however it also has Bill Turner's identification as William N.Ward . I am not sure exactly how this was determined. Major William Ward was born in 1805 and would have been in his late 50's when this image was taken. The subject in this photo appears to be a little younger. He also had 2 sons, both killed during the war, with the oldest named William Norvell Ward Jr. however his highest rank appears to have been captain. I cannot find where he ever obtained the rank of Major before his death from wounds received at Gaines' Mill, Virginia. An interesting side note is that Ward's Great grandson was Norvell G. Ward, a famous WW2 submarine commander. With all that said still it is still a very nice image of a full standing Confederate officer holding his sword taken by a famous Richmond photographer.
