Beautiful gilt brass buckle with applied die struck tongue disc attributed to Major John B. Gallie. Born in Scotland, John Gallie immigrated to this country around 1830 and settled in Savannah, Georgia where he became a respected businessman and member of the community. Prior to the Civil War Gallie commanded the famed Savannah Chatham Artillery. At the outbreak of the War he was appointed Major of company G 22nd Battalion Georgia Heavy Artillery. While defending the city of Savannah at Fort McAllister in February 1863 he was killed when struck by a cannonball fired from the USS Montauk during the battle.

This exact buckle is pictured in Relics of the Coastal Empire The Civil War Years on page 79. This buckle along with his sword and his uniform buttons descended through the Gallie family to the Bond family and then to prominent Savannah, Georgia antique dealer who is now deceased.
