Nicely inscribed on the throat of the scabbard is LT. JGS HAM. Research finds only one possible match. Lieutenant John Guy Smith Ham from Butts County, Georgia enlisted in the 30th Georgia Infantry on September 25, 1861 as a Sargent and rose to the rank of 1st. Lieutenant. Lt. Ham was mortally wounded during the Battle of Jackson, Mississippi on July 16, 1863 at the age of 42. The sword is a European import foot officers sword and is in nice condition. About 90% of the original shark skin wrap and all of the triple wrap brass wire remain on the grips. The brass guard and Pommel cap have a pleasant mustard brown patina. The metal scabbard has an overall dark patina with the drag having several dents from service in the field. The blade has a nice gun metal grey patina. A good Confederate used sword with a great history worthy of the finest collection.
