Neatly inscribed on the guard is George H. Turner 9th Michigan Cavalry from his friends in Mendon, N.Y. George Turner from Coldwater, Michigan enlisted at 19 years old as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company I of the 9th Michigan Cavalry and rose to the rank of Captain. The 9th Michigan was part of the Army and Department of Ohio and lost 184 men to battle and disease during the war. The regiment was active in the capture of John Hunt Morgan and General Sherman's looting and pillaging March to The Sea. The sword is European and the mounts and guard have a nice smooth patina with the presentation on the guard. The grips are nice with Red Moroccan leather and twisted brass wire wrap with one small wear place as seen in the pictures. The blade has a smooth gray patina with the floral etching extending down approximately 30% of the blade. About 2/3 down the scabbard is an interesting repair possibly done in the field by installing a tight fitting contoured sleeve around the scabbard.
