Untouched condition James Conning Cavalry saber manufactured in Mobile, Alabama. New York native James Conning had a military goods business and also is listed as a jeweler in Mobile. During the civil War Conning manufactured fine officers swords for private sales and also had a contract for 500 cavalry sabers with the state of Alabama. This example is typical of all his cavalry sabers and is serial numbered 69 on the pommel cap. The unstopped fuller blade has an overall mottled grey appearance with several very tiny nicks on the edge. The brass guard and pommel cap have a pleasant patina with a few nicks and dings from field use. The leather grips are deteriorated to some extent as most Conning Cavalry sabers due to the inferior leather used. The original brass twisted wire wrap is intact with a break near the pommel cap as shown in my photos. All in all a decent and rare confederate used cavalry saber.
