Beautiful sword made by the Ames Mfg. Company Chicopee Massachusetts for a high ranking Georgia officer circa 1850. A definite Ames variation of the 1830 Dragoon Officer's Sword with a leather covered grip. The blade is etched with what appears to be a Seminole Indian supporting the Great Seal of the State of Georgia and with a Federal eagle on the opposite side. The rest of the blade is etched with floral motifs and in excellent condition. The guard retains most of the gold gilt with a medallion of an American eagle between the branches of the Gothic style guard. The browned scabbard is trimmed with fancy gold gilded mounts. Overall length of the blade is 29 1/2 inches. This exact sword is pictured on page 151 of the book THE AMES SWORD COMPANY 1829/ 1935 by John D. Hamilton
