Third Michigan Cavalry Soldiers Pocket Diary

Pocket diary for William M. Sheppard of company M of the 3rd Michigan Cavalry. The diary covers private Sheppard's service for the year 1864. Sheppard enlisted on February 25th 1864 at Paw Paw, Michigan and served until he was mustered out in February 1866. Interesting notations about camp life, picket duty and guarding deserters. One humorous mention of the new recruit going to the bathroom and asking the Colonel to hold his gun. The covering is stressed and the binding is loose with notations in ink and pencil.
