Rare example of a Peter. Tait & Company of Limerick, Ireland Confederate shell jacket. Only a handful of examples of P Tait shell jackets are in existence today. No history is known other than it turned up in Alabama a number of years ago. The jacket shows evidence of being altered at one time to a smaller size quite possibly for a drummer boy. When it originally surfaced it was missing the buttons, lining and had areas of moth damage. It has been expertly repaired by leading textile conservator Lynn Gorges of the Historic Textile Studio. The jacket comes with a letter of examination and authenticity from noted Confederate cloth expert Les Jensen and a restoration report by Lynn Gorges.
