Almost impossible to find complete, this example is complete with all the straps and the original waist belt and buckle. I see the boxes alone from time selling for around $500.00, but never a complete set particularly as nice as this. All the over the shoulder straps are soft and pliable and complete with the attachments. The waist belt is soft and pliable and retains the original special buckle. In the place of the box plate on the outside flap it is an embossed the center and a circular Col. Mann's patent reissued June 7th 1864/ E. Gaylord- maker Chicopee, Mass. In the bottom right hand corner is stamped the sub inspectors mark. This pattern cartridge box was introduced by Colonel W.D. Mann in December of 1863 and was designed to be an improvement of earlier accoutrements. One interesting improvement is a pull ring attached to the tin to raise it up for access to the lower level of cartridges.
