This exact carbine, serial number 3878, is listed as one known to have been issued to company H of the 2nd West Virginia Cavalry in 1863. The 2nd was a hard fighting unit serving under Hunter, Sheridan, and George Custer throughout the war. The carbine is in fine condition with some of the original blue remaining on the barrel. The receiver retains some of the case hardening that has mellowed into a mottled appearance. All the markings are strong and sharp along with a sharp inspectors cartouche on the stock. The wood is very nice and in fine condition and showing very little wear but does have a small crack near the trigger guard. All the mechanical actions are crisp and functional.
