Fine example of the model 1840 Ames cavalry saber dated 1847. It is interesting to note that 2,720 sabers were delivered to the U.S. ordinance department in 1847.The blade is sharply stamped NP AMES / Cabotville/ 1847/ and on the obverse US over RC. The blade retains a deep mottled grey appearance with some nicks on the edge hardly noticeable to the eye. The scabbard has a brown appearance with 3 visible dents from actual use. The leather grips are fine with the original twisted brass wire. The brass hilt and pommel cap may have been cleaned years ago and have a pleasing aged patina. Inspectors marks JWR and JPO visible on the pommel cap. A nice example of a sword that saw service in 2 wars.
