Nice example of a Eli Whitney rifle altered to .58 caliber, with the addition of a long range rear sight and by providing a clamp on bayonet lug for a saber bayonet. These alterations were performed in 1861 by the Colt Factory and estimated to be in excess of 5000. Brass parts are all in nice condition with the trigger guard and end barrel band retaining the original sling swivels. The wood is in fine condition and retains the the faint impression of the inspectors cartouche opposite the lock. All markings on the barrel and lock plate are strong and sharp with the lock dated 1852. The clamp on bayonet lug is serial numbered and has the matching serial number on the barrel. The ramrod has also been altered by recessing the end for the minie ball.
