Type 3 example made without the patch box as seen on types 1 and 2. This example has the large style long range rear sight and the lug on the barrel for a sabre bayonet. Limited numbers are known to have been manufactured between 1859 through sometime in 1862. Interesting this example is equipped with a 2 piece iron and brass trigger guard and a pewter nose cap .Condition is overall fine plus with an overall brownish gray patina on all the metal parts. The lock is marked E. Whitney and functions mechanically perfect. The wood is overall fine original condition with a tiny crack running from the rear lock screw about an inch and a half forward as shown in the photos. The butt plate shows some pitting more than likely from at one time sitting on a damp floor. Overall a very nice example of a very desirable civil war firearm.
