2 discharges and cabinet card photo of Jabez M. Whitney of the 1st Minnesota Mounted Rangers and the 1st regiment Minnesota Heavy Artillery. Private Whitney enlisted in the Minnesota first regiment of mounted rifles in September 1862 and was discharged in October 1863. The mounted rifles participated in several campaigns against the Indians with 3 killed and 1 wounded in the battle of Big Mound Dakota Territory. Interestingly some of the members of the regiment had lost family members in a previous Indian massacre. After his discharge Jabez Whitney reenlisted in the 1st Minnesota Heavy Artillery and served until the wars end.
