This is the same canteen pictured on page 136 in CIVIL WAR CANTEENS by Stephen W. Sylvia and Michael J. O'Donnell. The description is as follows. Oblate spheroid tin canteen "8 1/2 inch diameter" with a leather sling, brown woolen cover, large tin spout (1 inch opening), and 4 sling loops. It's stopper and chain differ from the M-1858 and may be correct for this canteen. This canteen was carried by Pvt. Walter Rose, Co. F 196th O.V.I. At this point I have not been able to determine how the ID was determined. My research indicates that there were at least 5 possible Union soldiers with that name and 2 Confederate soldiers.
