Beautiful rope border buckle with a deep dark patina and all hooks intact on the back. The plate is attached to a nice leather belt however I do not feel that it is original to the plate. With it is a type written index card indicating that it was captured by Captain William Garland during the Civil War. William Garland served in the Third Massachusetts Cavalry in both the Western and Eastern theaters of war. If the information on the card is correct, it was more than likely obtained in actions that he participated in and around Louisiana since these plate are considered Western theater plates. A very desirable confederate belt plate from an iconic Civil War collection.
