US Model 1842 Harpers Ferry Musket with "TAKEN FROM THE BATTLEFIELD FEB. 8. 62 ROANOKE. ISLAND A. SHERMAN neatly carved in the stock. Wood is in decent condition with a crack behind the barrel tang. Lock is dated 1851 with pitting overall on the metal parts heavier in some spots. Due to the pitting it may have been found sometime after the battle. Research finds one possible match as to the identity of A. Sherman that being Abial Sherman who served in the 4th Rhode Island Infantry. Enlisting in Exter, Rhode Island on 10/10 1861 and deserting a year later Sherman would have been at Roanoke, Island with the 4th Rhode Island Infantry. A Identified historic musket the the collection of the late Steve Mullinax.
