Nice 1850 Staff and Field sword from rare retailer

Outstanding condition Staff and Field sword sold by Washington Retailer M. W. Galt & Brother Washington D.C. The sword blade was made by Collins and clearly marked. M.W. Galt was Washington's oldest business operating for nearly 2 centuries. Established in 1802 the firm finally closed it's doors March 8, 2001. Galt and Brother was involved in the jewelry, silver, swords and the military trades with Presidents and First Ladies among their clients. It is documented that the first watch President Abraham Lincoln ever owned was being repaired at the shop when Fort Sumter was fired on beginning The War Between the States. The workman secretly inscribed the underside of the watch movement to commemorate the event. JONATHAN DILLON APRIL 1861- FORT SUMTER WAS ATTACKED BY THE REBELS ON THE ABOVE DATE. J. DILLON APRIL 13, 1861 WASHINGTON THANK GOD WE HAVE A GOVERNMENT. President Lincoln had many things made there for Mary Todd Lincoln. Edith Galt took over management of the store upon her husband's death and would later marry President Woodrow Wilson. The sword is in beautiful condition with a crisp etched blade. Strongly etched is the firm name and address with Monitor on the other side. Patriotic U.S. and OUR Flag further down on the blade. Brass has a nice mustard patina with 99% of the leather intact and 100% of the twisted wire wrap. Metal scabbard retains most of its dark finish. Overall a nice sword from a seldom encountered and historic retailer.
