Nice example of a Jenks Navy Carbine serial number 161 and dated 1843, the first year of production. One of approximately 4,250 manufactured by N.P. Ames Springfield, Massachusetts from 1843 to 1846. Sharp markings allover with nice metal and some original finish remaining. Two inspector initials visible on the stock which is nice with the exception several small pin holes near the but plate. The barrel has sharp rifling and has the oval loading aperture alteration performed circa 1861 to accept paper cartridges.
