Owned by the Rebel Lieutenant Jenkins of the Rebel troop raised near Edisto, South Carolina. Procured from Charleston S.C. by William H. Case USA/ AAG. reads the old tag glued to the scabbard.

Preliminary research indicates that Company I of the 3rd South Carolina Cavalry was formed on the island by John O. Jenkins older brother of Confederate General Micah Jenkins. The recruits were made up of residents on the island, many of them young boys. My research indicates that 14 Jenkins served in Co. I of the 3rd South Carolina Cavalry. Of those 14, I found that 2 were officers. One of those is John O. Jenkins who enlisted as a Captain and his son John M. who was a Lieutenant. Since Edisto Island was used as a staging area for Union troops it seems possible that it may have been looted from the Jenkins plantation on the island. Another possibility is that it could have been captured when 9 members of Company I of the 3rd South Carolina Cavalry were captured on the island by a Naval party from the USS Kingfisher. As for William H. Case I have not yet been able to pin him down. I am working on several possibilities at this time to id him.

The sword is a product of Haiman of Columbus, Georgia and is in fine untouched condition with the exception of the drag which is missing. Hopefully ongoing research will recover the full story.
