Interesting folk art Civil War soldiers carved wood pipe. Boldly inscribed on the front are the initials J.L.B. and 1863. around the sides nicely carved is Falmouth Jan. 6th. Not sure what the significance of January 6th 1863 is and who J.L.B. might of been. The Union Army was in camp at Falmouth across the river from Fredericksburg at that time after their disastrous defeat there in December of 1862. The January 6th 1863 date was 2 weeks prior to General Ambrose Burnside's infamous mud march disaster. Future research might uncover more to the story of the pipe.
