These type unmarked swords have always intrigued me as to who the maker was. Whoever manufactured them evidently had close ties to Louis Froelich who is the attributed maker for the so called Kenansville Cavalry Sabers. The blades and scabbards were evidently made by the same manufacturer. Both swords have the typical Kennansville rounded spine blade and the distinct crude lapped scabbard with the riveted throat washer and the distinct drag The difference in the classic Kennansville sabers are the classic pommel cap and guard along with the Roman Numeral assembly marks on the guard and scabbard throat.
There is some speculation among collectors that these swords, which evidently were made in large numbers, could possibly be a product of Boyle & Gamble due to similarity in the guards. With all that said it leaves more questions than answers. One being did Louis Froelich make the classic and later changing molds for the guard and pommel cap while saving brass with the lighter guard ? Did one unknown contractor supply blades and scabbards to both Froelich and Boyle & Gamble ? Since they are not any known manufacturer marked swords of either pattern could someone else have made them? Both styles were evidently made in large quantities with quite a few examples of both patterns existing in collections.
The sword is in overall fine condition with most of the leather and twisted iron wire wrap remaining on the grip. The scabbard has an overall grey appearance from having been cleaned in recent years. The unstopped fullered blade is nice and has a nice grey mottled appearance with one minor nick near the end of the blade .The brass guard and pommel cap have a very pleasing dark untouched patina.
