This is the standard production model with the flat lockplate dated 1845. Sometimes called the Navy box lock this one is 1 of approximately 2000 produced by N.P. Ames Springfield, Massachusetts under contract to the U.S. Government. Gun is in as found condition with a dark uncleaned overall patina with pitting in several areas with nice markings. The bolster area around the nipple has pitting extending to the top of the barrel. The top of the barrel is marked USN over 1845 with RP over P. The lock is marked N.P. Ames Springfield Mass. and with USN 1845 at the back. The action is mechanically perfect and is crisp. All brass parts have an overall pleasing patina. The wood overall is nice with the usual nicks and dings associated with actual service and with a large 34 opposite the lock more than likely the rack number.
