Nice seated view of Major Rice Evans holding his kepi on his knee. Graves enlisted in the 2nd Kentucky Infantry and quickly became the regimental adjutant. In late 1861 he was promoted to Captain and appointed to command Graves Artillery. His skill was soon recognized and he was appointed to Major in October 1862. He served as divisional Chief of Artillery under General John C. Breckinridge. Major Graves served in many battles and campaigns including Fort Donaldson, Battle of Shiloh, Siege of Vicksburg, Stones River, where he was wounded twice, and Jackson Mississippi. At the Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia he was mortally wounded. Clear image with minor damage to the very bottom left hand corner.
