Excavated example of an extremely rare only known example of an ethnic Savannah, Georgia militia unit founded in 1846. The German Volunteers were later incorporated into the elite Independent Volunteer Battalion when the State of Georgia began organizing groups in the state. At the out break of the War Between the States they were organized into the 1st Regiment of Volunteers and served in the Savannah, Georgia area. Excavated in the old German area of Savannah it is cast brass with the letters G V engraved on the front. The belt loop bar on the back is missing. This exact plate is pictured on page 143 of Steve Mullinax's book Confederate Belt Buckles and Plates.
