Exciting fresh find historically important presentation Smith & Wesson pistol. Nicely engraved on frame " PRESENTED BY CAPT. THEODORE GREGG TO MISS JULIA A. MARCUM THE HEROINE OF EAST TENNESSEE." A quick Goggle search reveals an interesting story of how a young 16 year old Julia fought off confederate soldiers who were intent on killing her Unionist father in Scott County, Tennessee northwest of Knoxville. On the early morning of Sept. 7th 1861 during a vicious struggle with a soldier, Julia critically mauled him with an axe but lost her left eye and had the third finger of her right hand shot off. Julia survived the war and became the only female civilian to receive a Civil War soldier's pension by special act of Congress in 1885. After the civil War Julia taught school, never married and died at the age of 91 in Whitney, Kentucky. It is understandable that no one would want to marry a woman that mean. I know I would not either. The presenter of the pistol, Captain Theodore Gregg of the 45th Pennsylvania Infantry had a distinguished career during the Civil War. Twice wounded he rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel by the end of the war. During the Battle of the Crater he killed a confederate officer who was trying to capture him by impaling the officer with his sword. It is not known at this time what the connection between Captain Gregg and Julia Marcum might have been. The 45th Pennsylvania saw service in East Tennessee between August 1863 through March 1864 and it is plausible that they came in contact during this time.
The pistol is a Smith and Wesson 2nd issue model 1 in 22 caliber . It is in fine condition with the exception of a piece of wood missing of of one of the grips as shown in the photos. All mechanics are fine with the cylinder rotating properly.
