Single shot percussion made by Henry Aston of Middletown Connecticut. Approximately 24,000 were produced between 1846 thru 1850 under contract to the U.S. government. The lock and barrel tang are marked 1849 with tang date a little light on the 9 but clearly visible. US over JH and P markings are sharp and clear on the barrel opposite the bolster. The lock is nicely marked US over H. Aston forward of the hammer and MIDD tn Conn. and the date 1849 on the rear of the lock. The action and all mechanical parts are fine and function perfectly. All the metal parts are very fine with a mottled grey appearance. All of the brass parts have a nice aged patina and are not polished. The wood is very fine with sharp inspectors marks opposite the lock and with a just a couple minor dings. This particular example shows very little use and would make a nice addition to any collection of U.S. martial arms.
