Single shot model 1842 single shot pistol manufactured by I.N. Johnson of Middletown, Connecticut. Johnson at one time had been a partner of H.Aston but had broken off his relationship to start is own company. Johnson produced approximately 10,000 of the model 1842 single shot pistols under contract to the U.S. government between 1853 to 1855. This example is nicely marked on the lock forward of the hammer US over I.N. Johnson and at the back of the lock MIDD tn Conn. 1854. The barrel is dated 1854 on the tang with a nice US over JH over P opposite the percussion bolster. Most of the metal parts have an even mostly light brown patina. The brass is is a pleasant gold color having possibly been cleaned many years ago.. The mechanical action is crisp and tight and operates perfectly. The wood has a dark brown walnut color with faint inspector marks opposite the lock. The wood has a crack running down at an approximate 30 degree angle down to the side plate as shown in my pictures.
