Fresh to the market, wonderful rare example of a Confederate Carbine made in Columbus, Georgia by J.P. Murray-Greenwood & Gray. This fine example is a 1st. model as identified by the double banded front barrel band and the brass side plate patterned after the Mississippi rifle. I have had the opportunity to handle 2 of these scarce arms in my lifetime and this is by far the best example to my knowledge. The lock is marked with the serial number 25 on the inside and the lock screws and tang screws are serial numbered 4. The hammer is serial numbered 17 on the inside. The wood is in fine condition with a few minor nicks and dings. Deeply carved are the initials JHS on the rear of the stock. Just below the initials are what appears to be the remains of an old museum tag. The lower half is all that remains and I am unable to make out the writing. The brass barrel bands, side plate, butt-plate and trigger guard retain a nice pleasant deep aged patina. The barrel and lock-plate have an pleasing brown patina with good markings. The lock-plate is marked JP MURRAY over COLUMBUS GA. and the barrel is marked on the top opposite the bolster PRO (for proved) and with the initials F.C.H. (for F.C. Humphries). This type barrel marking indicates arms that were accepted for the Confederate government. The .58 caliber bore still retains the 3 lands and groove rifling although somewhat dirty. A very rare and desirable Confederate carbine in way above average condition.
