Interesting alteration by Leman for Civil War use by turning the barrel down to accept a socket bayonet and boring to .58 caliber. The front sight was removed and another was fabricated in a position further back and a lug was fabricated near the muzzle to accept a socket bayonet.. This rifle is one of approximately 5000 made by George W. Tryon of Philadelphia between 1846 -1848. The barrel has a light brown patina with the proof markings visible opposite the bolster, which has been altered. All the brass parts have a mellow patina with several markings visible in places. The lock is mechanically perfect and nicely marked TRYON over US forward of the hammer. Vertical at the rear of the lock is PHILADELPHIA PA. 1847. The stock appears to have been lightly sanded and has several minor cracks as shown in my pictures. Stamped opposite the patch box are the letters IRG and the number 62.
