EXCEPTIONAL CONFEDERATE FAYETTEVILLE TYPE 4 RIFLE

Near very fine example of a Confederate Fayetteville rifle. The condition is far better than most examples commonly encountered. Made from parts and equipment captured from the U.S. arsenal at Harper's Ferry. The rifled 33 inch barrel is secured by 2 brass bands with strong markings on the lock. The lock is marked FAYETTEVILLE in front of the hammer with an EAGLE over CSA. The lock mechanism is mechanically perfect and functions very well. The lock has an overall dark grey appearance and is dated 1863. The barrel is pitted around the nipple and bolster with a still visible date of 1864. The barrel has an overall dark brown appearance having never been cleaned and with good rifling. In my years of collecting I have noted several examples of the type 4 rifles with 1863 dated locks and with an 1864 dated barrel barrel. The wood is in fine condition with several nicks and dings associated with use and still retains the J B inspector's mark opposite the lock. After careful examination the rear site appears to be a replacement and not original to the gun .Still a wonderful example worthy of the finest collections.
