Estimated production of the M1841 rifle produced by Robbins and Lawrence of Windsor, Vermont was approximately 15,000 produced between 1848-1853. This example was altered for Civil War use by the Colt Factory in1861. Colt attached a folding leaf rear sight, bored and rifled the barrel to .58 caliber and provided a clamp on bayonet lug to accept a saber bayonet. The ram rod was recessed to facilitate loading of the .58 caliber conical Minie ball. This gun is missing the clamp on bayonet lug. Overall good condition with a brownish mottled appearance on the metal parts. The lock dated 1848 has fine markings and the mechanical action is crisp and operates perfectly. The wood has evidence of having a coat of varnish applied many years ago but still retains a visible inspector's cartouche. The barrel markings are good with the barrel dated 1853. All of the brass parts have an even patina with the US marking on the butt plate.
