James Anderson entered as a 1st Lieutenant in the 1ST Georgia volunteers infantry in March 1862 and until they disbanded after 12 months service. In May 1862 he was commissioned as into the 12th Georgia Light Artillery and rose to the rank of Major. The 12th Georgia light artillery was organized from men of Ramsey's 1st Georgia volunteers. Originally the 12th Georgia Light Artillery served in the department of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida and was active at Fort McAlister, Fort Sumpter and at Battery Wagner. In May of 1864 the 12th Georgia Battalion was transferred to Evans' brigade in the Army of Northern Virginia. In Virginia they would be reorganized as infantry and fought at Cold Harbor and at the Battle of Winchester, Virginia where Major Anderson was wounded through both thighs resulting in his capture. Upon his capture he was imprisoned at Point Lookout, Maryland until his exchange on February 20, 1865. After the war James Anderson returned to his home in Newnan, Georgia and served as Sherrif of Coweta County Georgia. The old Major would pass away on November 15, 1902, at the age of 67 and is buried in Oak Hill cemetery in Newnan, Georgia. A folded piece of paper with the image identifies it as James W. Anderson and indicates it was purchased from Paula Samples of Dublin, Georgia in 1965.
