Very rare hard to find CDV taken in April 1870 by Savannah photographer D.J. Ryan. General Lee had traveled South with his daughter Agnes for rest and warm weather due to his deteriorating health. All along the route South from Richmond the train was met by adoring crowds showing enormous affection for the General. While in Savannah Lee met with Johnston who was working in Savannah in the insurance business and whom he had not seen since the Civil War. Both Lee and Johnson were 63 years old when they were photographed by D. J. Ryan in Savannah. The 1870 census list David J. Ryan as born in Ireland and 33 years old working as a photographer. There are 2 variations, one with an inkwell on the desk and this one with what appears to be a book. Copies of the photo were later sold to aid the Ladies' Memorial of Savannah to raise funds for a monument. Later General Lee and his daughter traveled south to Cumberland Island near St. Marys Georgia to view the grave of his father Light Horse Harry Lee who was buried there. Sadly, Robert E. Lee would pass away 6 months later on October 12, 1870. Joseph E. Johnson would live until his passing in March 1891. Clear image with a crease that runs across the very top of the photo. also there is a small piece of archival tape on the back where it was mounted in an oval wall frame.
