Incredible photograph of famed Confederate Naval officers Raphael Semmes and John McIntosh Kell taken by S.J. Wiseman in Southhampton England. After the loss of the Alabama Semmes and part of the remaining crew were rescued by an English yacht and some of the remaining crew returned to England. It was shortly after that this iconic photograph was taken in England. Seated in the middle of the photo is Dr. John Wiblin. According to research by Maurice Rigby in the United Kingdom Wiblin was the Doctor that had attended to Raphael Semmes' injury to his right hand caused by a fragment of an exploding shell from the action with the USS Kearsarge. Interesting in the photo Semmes has his right hand in his coat. Dr. Wiblin reported that Semmes had sustained three small cuts to the posterior part of his right hand. The wound had caused great tumefaction up the Admiral's right arm. The photo measures approximately 10" by 11" and is mounted in a beautiful 16" x 14" Victorian frame. A very rare and seldom encountered photo of Who's Who of Confederate Naval history.
