According to the previous owner this rifle is identified to W.W. Williams who served in company B of the 8th Tennessee Infantry. The only information to support the ID is a metal tag attached to the gun with the name W.W. Williams. Also, the rifle came with a CDV of a Confederate officer inscribed in pencil as being W.W. Wilson. My research finds a William W. Williams that served as a private in company B of the 8th Tennessee infantry. Since William W. Wilson of the 8th Tennessee was not an officer and the CDV is of an officer therefor I question the name associated with the Fayetteville. I am selling it as an unidentified Fayetteville rifle. I will then list the CDV and sell it separate.
The lock is dated 1864 with the barrel date obscured by pitting. The VP over the eagle is visible and clear on the left side of the barrel across from the bolster. The bolster, hammer and barrel around the bolster has pitting and the wood around the nipple is eroded. The wood is nice and has never been cleaned and has the usual nicks and dings associated from field use. The brass fixtures have a pleasing dark patina and appear to have never been cleaned. The bore is smooth and appears to have been bored out for use as a shotgun with the barrel retaining a nice dark patina. Overall, a decent example of a Confederate Fayetteville rifle.
