Identified Confederate canteen to Martin Dougherty who was killed in the battle of Missionary Ridge. Carved on the front is M. Dougherty Co. G 11th regiment Tenn. Vol. On the back is his initials M. Doh with T.M. below.
Records show that Martin Dougherty enlisted as a private on May 1, 1862, in the 11th Tennessee Infantry. Further research indicates that he was born in 1836 in Dickson, Tennessee. In May of 1858 he married Elizabeth Howell. During that marriage the couple had 2 children. The 1860 census list him as working as a farmer and residing in Anderson, Tennessee. My research in American Civil War database shows him enlisting in company E 11th Tenn. and transferring into company G. Beyond that there are no further records. A search on Ancestry provides more information showing him as killed at Missionary Ridge in October 1864 and being buried there. The battle of Missionary Ridge occurred in November, so I feel there was some confusion as to the month.
The canteen is in good condition with the normal wear associated with use and age. Part of the leather strap remains, and the spout is a repurposed U.S. spout probably a field replacement. My research is included.
