Serial number 36310 Sharps in dark, uncleaned condition with an overall brown patina. Sources indicate that at least 3000 of these brass-mounted examples. The state of Georgia is known to have purchased 1600 of the New Model 1859 arms from the Sharps company and an estimated 400 from commercial sources. South Carolina and Virginia are also known to have had some of these carbines as well. Published sources indicate that elements of the 1st and 5th Georgia Cavalry, as well as the 2nd and 57th Georgia infantry, along with some local state units, were issued these carbines. This example has 3 initials carved into the stock, and according to the gentleman I got this from the initials are for Abraham D. Levy. My quick research finds an A D. Levy serving in Olmstead's 1 Georgia Infantry and possibly the same A.D. Levy in the 18th Battalion, Georgia Infantry. The 1860 census lists an Abraham D. Levy, age 20, working as a clerk in Savannah, Georgia. Olmstead's 1st Georgia Infantry was made up of troops from the Savannah, Georgia area. After looking at the additional Georgia units that are known to have been issued the New Model 1859 Sharps carbines, I could not find any possible matches. I feel that additional research is needed to conclusively attribute the carbine to A. D. Levy. Unfortunately, the previous owner is unable to provide any information on how the Abraham D. Levy identification was obtained.
The gun shows use and has an overall brown patina on all of the metal parts, including the brass. The bore is dirty with some rifling remaining, and all the mechanical. The stock shows normal wear associated with field use and has several cracks in the fore end, as shown in my photos. All the markings are clear on the barrel and lock.
