One of approximately 13,000 model 1817 muskets manufactured between 1817 -1842. The lock is dated 1842 with strong US over Derringer Phila marking. This example is altered from flint to percussion by the National armory or often called the Belgian method with the nipple in the barrel. The nipple appears to be a replacement. The barrel has an overall dark patina and bored to .58 caliber with rifling remaining. The barrel has a light salt and pepper pitting overall with the barrel markings clearly visible. Inside the patch box is a stamping that I cannot make out and the letters EH carved. All the mechanical action is crisp on functions properly. The wood has several nicks and dings with a sliver of wood missing behind the lock as shown in my photos. A faint inspector's cartouche is visible opposite the lock.
