A very fine to mint condition type 2 1855 rifle that appears to have never been fired. Total production estimated to have been around 3,122 type 2 arms manufactured between 1859 and 1861 at the Harpers Ferry arsenal. The lock is dated 1861 with a barrel date of 1860, and all markings are sharp and clear and appear to be in near mint condition. The bore is bright and in fine condition, matching the condition of the rest of the rifle. The wood is very fine with a few nicks from storage and has a raised grain typical of arms showing little use. Evidence of what appears to be a cartouche is on the stock opposite the lock, which looks like it was removed at some point in time. Considering the fact that the Harpers Ferry arsenal fell to Virginia troops under Stonewall Jackson in April 1861, the late-dated rifles are very rare indeed. A small number of rifles were assembled from captured inventory by the state of Virginia. Interestingly, this specimen has a 1860 and 1861 dated lock and barrel. Information I received from a trusted source said that the state of Massachusetts purchased a few, and that the MS inside the patch-box indicates that it is one that the state purchased.
