Fine specimen 4th type variation dated 1864 often described as a Bowie knife bayonet. Nice overall mustard brown patina on all brass parts. The leather scabbard is fine free from any breaks or tears with strong stitching. The pommel flat has a distinct script WS within an oval which signifies U.S. Navy inspector Daniel Reynolds. Very nice bright blade with a few minor nicks visible and strongly marked AMES Mfg. CO. CHICOPEE MASS. The opposite side is marked U.S.N. over D.R.and dated 1864. The wood grips are fine with the normal nicks and dings associated with use.
