Top quality condition, serial number 1621 C.S. Robinson Confederate carbine. This example is one of the better-condition Robinson carbines I have had the opportunity to handle. The company entered into a contract with the Confederate government in December 1862 to manufacture Sharps-pattern carbines. The firm manufactured an estimated 2000 arms before the company was taken over by the Confederate government in March of 1863. The carbine is mechanically perfect with crisp lock action. All the metal parts have an overall dark grey appearance with markings visible on the barrel and lock. The only pitting noticeable is very minor around the nipple. The breech block housing has a visible casting flaw often seen on these type arms. The serial number 1621 is clearly visible on the barrel tang and the lock plate. The lock is marked S.C. ROBINSON ARMS MANUFACTORY RICHMOND VIRGINIA 1862. On the barrel in front of the sight is marked RICHMOND, VA. 1862. Forward of the sight on top of the barrel is S.C. ROBINSON MANUFACTORY over stamped on RICHMOND, VIRGINIA. The stock is in fine condition with the initials T R and W visible, carved on the left side. The for-end is fine with two gouges visible, probably from flaws in the wood.
