Item #: C 8

The sword has a tag from the previous owner stating that it is identified to Captain Samuel Scott Thomas of the 28th Michigan Infantry. Also the tag states that the previous owner has his papers. When I obtained the sword there were not any papers with it and the previous owner is deceased.
The sword is a non regulation officers sword of European manufacture. Brass guard and back-strap retains a nice mellow patina. The sharkskin grips are intact showing wear in places. The scabbard has a smooth patina but has some rust pitting in 3 places as shown in my pictures. The blade is beautiful and exhibits a frosty almost mint luster as evidenced in my photos.
Captain Samuel Scott Thomas enlisted at Allegan, Michigan as a private in company K 28th Michigan Infantry and rose to the rank of captain. He mustered out for disability in May of 1865. Captain Thomas was born in 1831 and lived his entire life in Allegan, Michigan and passed away on September 6, 1897 and is buried in Oakwood cemetery.
