Nice example of the smooth bore .69 caliber Model 1847 Cavalry Musketoon that was altered from the Model 1847 Cavalry Musketoon. The saddle ring bar and iron ramrod swivels were removed and replaced with new sling swivels that were attached to the rear barrel band and to the stock near the butt-plate along with a barrel lug on the bottom of the barrel. It is quite possible this was done for Civil War artillery use.
The brass barrel bands, trigger guard and butt plate have a pleasant patina. The U.S. markings on the butt plate appear to have been removed at some point in time. The iron parts show evidence of having been cleaned but have digressed to a grayish appearance. The barrel and lock have strong markings with matching dates of 1856. The end barrel band spring has the retaining pin broken off. The wood is fine with a good cartouche clearly visible opposite the lock. The ramrod does not appear to be original to the gun. Overall a nice example of a rare U.S. arm.
