Fresh. The presentation on the blade reads C.M. to W.A.R. I was told by the previous owner that the W.A.R.was William Atkinson Rowland who served as an assistant surgeon in the 44th Georgia Infantry. My research on who C.M. might have been is inconclusive. As far as the W.A.R. initials I did find several other Confederate field officers from Georgia with the same initials. Therefor I am unable to conclusively 100% attribute the sword to William Atkinson Rowland at this time. I am currently trying to find the gentleman who turned up the sword to see if he can provide any more information. Nicely etched blade with firm name and CS, cannons and floral motifs typical of E.J. Johnston. The blade has an unstopped fuller which varies from some E.J. Johnston swords which have a stopped fuller. The leather scabbard is very pliable, soft and intact but needs to be stabilized with with a veneer strip. The scabbard is 100% confederate appears to be original to the sword. The pined mounts vary from some E.J. Johnston swords but are completely original to the sword.
William A. Rowland proudly served with the 44th Georgia through the campaigns with the Army of Northern Virginia until his resignation and passed away in October 1903 in Orlando, Florida. Research is ongoing to verify the attribution of the sword to Rowland.
