Prior to the War between the States the state of Georgia purchased 1000 cartridge boxes with state plates from Emerson Gaylord of Chicopee, Massachusetts. This particular box once was part of the Steve Mullinax collection and appears to be a Gaylord box. Attached to the box is a cotton canvas sling with sewn leather attachment straps. Upon close examination the sling appears to have been with the box for a long time. The Georgia box-plate appears to be an excavated example which has been added to the box at some point in time. The reason I say that is that it has a crack on the face. I have seen dug plates that have similar cracks as having been in the ground and freezing. Also the lead appears to have oxidation similar to other excavated plates I have observed. The confusing part is that when you pull the plate back it has all appearances of having been with the box a long time. Overall the box is in good condition and retains the original tins. The leather latch tab is still attached but split on the end but can be easily repaired. The outside leather flap corners are flipped on the ends. I have been told that this was done to facilitate easy access to the cartridges during battle.
