Very fine example with a near mint frosty blade and generous amounts of gold gilt remaining. Ames 1850 and 1851 dated foot officers swords are extremely rare in any condition. Made under government contract approximately 500 with the 1851 dates were delivered from August to December 1851. These were ordered for active duty U.S. officers. The pommel cap bears the letters J W R for inspector James Wolfe Ripley. Also the pommel cap has the letter B for Robert P. Beales that is often found on the scabbard drag. The blade is nicely marked and displays the letters R P B for Robert P. Beales. A most beautiful sword dated 1851 in near mint condition which is extremely rare to find these early dated swords in this condition.
