According to noted Ames sword collector and expert Ron Maness, the state of Texas contracted with N.P. to purchase a small number of the 1850-foot officers' swords in 1851. The Ames company was known to have a good relationship with the state of Texas, as evidenced by known examples of the model 1833 artillery short swords with a star on the pommel and 280 model 1833 Dragoon sabers that were purchased by the Lone Star State. This sword is dated 1850, and with a star over the eagle etching on the blade. One could easily argue that this sword is one that went to Texas. To my knowledge, this is the only star over eagle etched Ames sword that I am aware of. Also, the sword appears to have battle damage with part of the hilt missing from a hard hit.
