Fine condition revolver in English .54-bore with a generous amount of the original blue remaining. The top of the barrel is retailer-marked E.M. Reilly &. Co. London. The Reilly family were well known gun makers and retailers in London, England, before the Civil War. E.M. Reilly, son of J.C. Reilly, operated as E.M. Reilly & Co. beginning in 1859. According to research by Tim Prince, most of the wedge frame guns from the Civil War period are in the 5,xxx serial range and below. This particular example is serial numbered 5644. It is interesting to note that, according to the Pratt list, a wedge frame revolver serial number 5054 was issued to the 18th Virginia cavalry. According to research by Tim Prince wedge frame revolver serial number 5553, attributed to Captain George Russel of the 54th Tennessee Infantry, resides in the Virginia Historical Society. Could this have been a Confederate blockade gun? It is possible, but we probably never know. With that said, this example is in fine condition with nice wood and the remaining original blue finish. A very nice example of a scarce Adams variant wedge-style revolver.
